Story & Atmosphere
Big Al's Drive In, a cherished fixture at 1844 Esplanade in Chico, California, offers a nostalgic dive into classic American drive-in fare with a distinct 1950s flair. This local gem is known for its inviting atmosphere, where patrons often find familiar faces and a community spirit that elevates the dining experience beyond just the food.
The drive-in specializes in burgers that spark lively debates among customers. Many compare Big Al's burgers favorably to well-known chains like In-N-Out, highlighting the quality ingredients and crispy fries that stand out for their seasoning and crunch. The deluxe double cheeseburger, paired perfectly with their fries, is a popular choice, offering robust flavors that satisfy cravings for a hearty, nostalgic meal.
Milkshakes here are not to be missed. The chocolate malt and peanut butter shakes come highly recommended, noted for their rich, creamy texture and authentic taste. While some flavors like the mocha chip milkshake may not appeal to every palate, the variety offers something for everyone seeking a sweet finish. The lemon ice is another signature delight, perfect for cooling off on hot days.
Service at Big Al’s is generally swift and friendly, with personalized touches like using names instead of numbers to place orders, which adds a welcoming charm. Although some visitors have noted occasional slowdowns or small burgers, the overall consensus praises the drive-in’s consistency and the genuine care of the staff.
What truly enriches the Big Al’s experience is its blend of good food, affordable prices, and an ambiance steeped in Americana. From retro paintings adorning the walls to the lively community vibe, each visit feels like stepping back into a simpler time with delicious offerings to match.
“ Great food with quick and friendly service. Burgers are comparable, but better, than in-n-out burgers with good ingredients and crispy fries. Chocolate malt was one of the best I've had. The only complaint is the dining area was saturated with flies. The minute we got our food they swarmed us. Made the eating experience very uncomfortable. I probably won't eat in again, but I'll definitely be going back and getting take out. ”
“ Service didn't take long, but the burger patties are pretty small, and the taste is just average. Better than McDonald's, but not by far... I prefer In-n-Out honestly. Cheaper and tastes better. ”
“ Food was good. The peanut butter milkshake and Oreo shake is good. We also tried the mocha chip shake. Personally we did not like the mocha chip. Fast service. ”
“ The good great, especially the fries. I like the crispness and the seasoning on it. I also liked the deluxe double cheeseburger which comes with fries. The service was realy good. I like how Big Al does names I stead of numbers. ”
“ Fries are good, food is always constantly good. The lemon ice is my go-to when it gets hot out. Service at walk up window isnt always the best but could be worse. Good ol'chico business that youre bound to see someone you know while you eat there. ”
